When Weeksville raced the Soviets into space

Sixty years ago this fall, on Oct. 4 1957, The Soviet Union launched Sputnik I into space as the world's first artificial satellite, ushering in the race to the moon. The size of a basketball, the polished metal sphere contained a radio transmitter that sent out a beeping signal as it circled the earth for 21 days.
