Several CubeSats are scheduled to be deployed from the International Space Station into orbit on Wednesday, February 12, including QARMAN and Phoenix.

QARMAN will perform experiments on stability during the the orbit phase and measurements of ablation and radiation during re-entry.

Amandine Denis ON4EYA reports QARMAN will deploy at 10:05 GMT, February 12 and the first beacons should be sent starting from 10:52 GMT over South-East Asia (Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore) and then over Australia. See https://twitter.com/AmandineOufti

Phoenix is a 3U CubeSat developed by Arizona State University to study the effects of Urban Heat Islands through infrared remote sensing. Following deployment, the Phoenix operations team would appreciate as much help as possible with identifying the spacecraft and verifying that it is operational.

Phoenix is scheduled for a deployment time of 8:30 GMT on February 12.

Please note that two CubeSats being deployed on this date operate on the same frequency. Both Phoenix and QARMAN share the frequency of 437.35 MHz, and both utilize an AX.25 9600 baud protocol with GMSK modulation. Both CubeSats will also be deployed within 1.5 hours of each other, and will therefore be close to each other in orbit. Please be mindful of this situation, and if you have any doubt about the CubeSat that you are receiving, please get in touch with Sarah Rogers KI7OOY, Project Manager, Phoenix CubeSat, sroger13 [at} asu.edu with any questions or concerns.

US Marines with Information Group II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MIG) participated in an amateur radio general licensing course January 27 – 31 on base as part of the group’s High Frequency Auxiliary Initiative. Members of the Brightleaf Amateur Radio Club of Greenville, North Carolina, helped the Marines in the class learn the principles of HF radio operations as a contingency against a peer-to-peer adversary in real-world operations.

During the course, Marines learned ham radio theory, band allocations, conventional and field-expedient antenna theory, and general ham radio operation and control. II MIG Commanding Officer Colonel Jordan Walzer created the High Frequency Auxiliary Initiative after recognizing the need for additional options in combat environments.

“Right now, our adversaries are aggressively pursuing counter-space weapons to target our satellites and ground stations,” Walzer is quoted in the article. “If our satellites get knocked out, what do we do then? [High Frequency] radio has been around for well over a century and is still used today. Why? Because it’s a reliable, low-cost alternative to satellite communications. With the right training and education, a Marine with a radio and some slash wire can communicate over-the-horizon for long distances, even between continents.”
